Museum Strongly Condemns Latest Iranian Holocaust Cartoon Contest

Washington, DC—The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum strongly condemns the 11th Tehran International Cartoon Biennial. The international contest, set for June 2016 and expected to attract entrants from 50 countries, invites contributors to create cartoons based on the Holocaust. The winner will receive a $50,000 prize.

The contest is part of an alarming trend by the Iranian government. It continues its pattern of holding contests soliciting cartoons promoting Holocaust denial and antisemitism. Similar contests were held in 2006 and 2015. And more importantly, Iran’s top leaders have repeatedly employed genocidal language against Israel and inflammatory speech to incite violence. We call on world leaders to join the Museum in denouncing this unacceptable behavior and all forms of Holocaust denial and antisemitism.
