Damaged Reel

The Museum’s Film and Video Archive helped to rescue the legacy of Julien Bryan by preserving many of the original films on Poland, which were suffering from serious deterioration when we obtained them in 2003. The longer we waited, the more we risked losing Bryan’s images forever. The photograph on the above shows the condition of one deteriorating and bubbling reel of 35mm nitrate as we received it. Our extraordinary efforts have produced new film copies of 47 reels. There are more than 140 film reels in the collection. US Holocaust Memorial Museum, courtesy of Julien Bryan Archive
