The process that culminated in the independence of South Sudan included extensive international engagement. As the new country develops, it is receiving significant support from international organizations and individual countries to help support its development and governance needs. But the tasks are enormous and the threats of violence remain serious enough that continued, close monitoring will likely be necessary for years.
