Ruth B. Mandel
Ruth B. Mandel is Director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. She has been a professor at the Institute for many years, and in 1994 was named Board of Governors Professor of Politics at Rutgers. From 1971 though 1994, Professor Mandel served as Director of Eagleton’s Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), where she remains affiliated as a Senior Scholar.
President George Bush appointed Professor Mandel to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council in 1991; she was named Vice-Chairperson by President Clinton in 1993. She is a former Chairperson of the Council’s Committee on Conscience.
Professor Mandel writes and speaks widely about women and leadership, with particular emphasis on women as political candidates, women in office, women’s political networks, and the “gender gap.” Her book, In the Running: The New Woman Candidate (Beacon Press, 1983), describes women’s experiences campaigning for office. In 1984, she was Executive Producer for Not One of the Boys, a 60-minute film created by CAWP to document the progress women have made and the obstacles they encounter as they enter political life.
Professor Mandel has overseen the Center’s work with women public officials. She has co-directed national research programs to examine the impact of women in public office, including a study in progress of the impact of women in the 103rd Congress. She is currently developing CAWPs’s New Leadership Program, including summer institutes and other educational programs to interest young women in political leadership.
A member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers, she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on women and American politics and women and political leadership. As a political analyst and observer of emerging trends in leadership, Professor Mandel appears frequently on radio and television. She has been interviewed on national network programs such as The Today Show, Good Morning America, and Nightline. Her past and present board memberships include the National Commission for the Renewal of American Democracy, National Council for Research on Women, and the editorial boards of Signs, and Women in Politics.
