Biography

Maina Kiai

Maina Kiai is currently a Strategic Advisor for the Movement for Political Accountability, (MOPA) an organization that brings together groups in Kenya aimed at making politicians more accountable to the people. Kiai is a former Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, is the Chairman of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). Prior to his position with KNCHR, Maina Kiai was the Director of Africa Programs at the International Human Rights Law Group (now Global Rights) based in Washington DC. Mr. Kiai was the Africa Director at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International in London, UK from 1999 to 2001. He is founding Executive Director of the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), a local Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) where he spearheaded the revitalization of the constitutional reform process (1992-1998). He has published extensively in Africa, Europe and the USA on various issues of social justice. In 2003, he was honored by being installed as a Chief of the Mende community in Sierra Leone for his role in capacity building on human rights and democracy. He attained a Bachelor of Law from the University of Nairobi, a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, and a Master of Law from Harvard Law School.
