Kalala Mbenga Kalao
Kalala Mbenga Kalao was a columnist in the early 1990’s at La Tempete des Tropiques (The Tropical Storm), an outspoken weekly in the former Zaire. His criticism of the government led to detention and torture. He was granted asylum in the United States in 1994. Since arriving in the United States, he has continued to write, contributing articles on African affairs to publications in the United States, Europe and Africa, including the Washington Post, Le Monde Diplomatique (Paris) and Le Soir (Brussels). He is chairman of a group that is forming a non-profit organization to promote freedom of the press in sub-Saharan Africa. He lives in Centreville with his wife, Sylvie, and their five-year-old son, Mitchell.
