Merrill Goldman
Merrill Goldman is Professor Emerita of History at Boston University. She has also been a fellow at several distinguished institutions, including the Wang Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Chinese Studies, 1984-85, and the Guggenheim Foundation, 1987-88. She has received the Radcliffe Graduate Medal for Distinguished Achievement, June 1981. The speech given at the award ceremony, “The Persecution of China’s Intellectuals,” was reprinted in Radcliffe Quarterly (September 1981), Dissent (Summer 1982), Across the Board (the Conference Board Magazine, May 1982), and Science and the Making of the Modern World (ed. John Marks, Heinemann, 1983).
Her professional affiliations include membership on the Council on Foreign Relations, Board Membership with Asia Watch, a division of Human Rights Watch, and Editorial Board of The China Quarterly.
She is the author of many books, including Literary Dissent in Communist China (1967); China’s Intellectuals: Advise and Dissent (1981); and Sowing the Seeds of Democracy in China: Political Reform in the Deng Xiaoping Decade (1994), which was selected as best book on Government published in 1994 by the Association of American Publishers, Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division.
She received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, her M.A. from Radcliffe, and her Ph.D. from Harvard University in History and Far Eastern Languages.
