About the artifacts
While fleeing Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia, Mosa Mandil and his family were detained by the Nazis. With their documents under question, Mosa pulled out a picture of his children smiling in front of a Christmas tree. The Nazis released the family, not knowing that the father had fooled them. Mosa’s Christmas picture of his Jewish children had been staged to promote his photo studio to his customers.
Credits: Photos of the Mandils with the Veselis, the Albanian Muslim family that sheltered them; the prison in Pristina where the Mandils and other Jewish families were detained for eight months; Gavra and Irena Mandil posing beside a Christmas tree; the exterior of the Mandil photo studio; Mandil family portrait (lower right: Irena, Gabriela, Gavra, and Mosa). USHMM, gift of Gavra Mandil.
