About the artifacts
Like many Holocaust survivors, Lilly Lax began rebuilding her life in a displaced persons camp. There she fell in love and became engaged to fellow survivor Ludwig Friedman. Ludwig bartered his rations for a German parachute, and, with the help of a seamstress, the couple had the parachute sewn into a beautiful wedding gown. This dress was later worn by Lilly’s younger sister Feige and more that a dozen other brides from the Bergen-Belsen and Celle displaced persons camps in Germany.
Credits: The Jewish marriage contract (ketubah) of Lilly and Ludwig Friedman; prayer shawl (tallit) bag; photos of two Jewish brides who later wore Lilly’s dress; wedding portrait of Lilly Lax and Ludwig Friedman; dress and gloves worn by Lilly at her wedding to Ludwig Friedman in January 1946. USHMM, gift of Lilly Friedman.
