About the artifacts
Created by Leon Jakubowicz during the four years he lived inside the Lodz ghetto in Poland, this model records the names of streets, boundaries, and the major buildings of the ghetto, as well as vestiges of humanity – Jewish civic institutions such as schools hospitals, and relief offices. Just before he was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau in August 1944, Leon managed to bury his model in the basement of an apartment building. Leon’s only hope was that if he didn’t survive the Holocaust, his hidden testimony would.
Credits: Leon Jakubowicz survived the Holocaust, as did this intricate model he created to bear witness to his life in the Lodz ghetto in Poland. Leon’s brother recovered the model immediately after the war. USHMM, gift of the Jacobson and Cifarelli families.
