Sixty years ago the Nazis unleashed the machinery of mass murder across Europe in what has come to be called the Holocaust. Despite the indifference of many and the outright collaboration of others in the murder of Jews, thousands of individuals, both Jewish and non–Jewish, took a stand against the persecution and killing of innocent people. They risked imprisonment and even death to rescue those in need and to resist Nazi designs. Others tried to force a response by arousing public opinion against the Nazis. These individual and collective efforts show us that compassion, courage, and morality were not totally extinguished in those dark years. For many, survival itself became an act of resistance. After the war, those who had survived the Holocaust struggled to rebuild their lives and communities, leading ultimately to a period of renewal.

These four themes—rescue, resistance, response, and renewal—are the focal points of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum during its 10th Anniversary year.

Using the resources of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and other sources, select one of the four 10th Anniversary themes and answer the following question:

How is the role of the individual reflected in the theme you have selected? Use the Museum's Web site for your research.
