HOLY SEE The International Catholic-Jewish Historical Commission The International Catholic-Jewish Historical Commission (ICJHC) was established by Cardinal Edward I. Cassidy, President of the Holy See’s Commission, and Seymour D. Reich, Chairman of the International Jewish Committee for Consultations, in October 1999. The ICJHC was made up of six historians (three Catholic and three Jewish scholars) and its mandate was to critically examine the 11 volumes of archival material entitled Actes et Documents du Saint Siège relatifs à la seconde guerre mondiale (ADSS), published by the Holy See’s Secretariat of State between 1965 and 1981. Included in these documents are the diplomatic correspondence of the Holy See's Secretariat of State with its representatives and foreign officials, as well as notes and memoranda from meetings with diplomats and Church leaders from various countries. In December 1999, the ICJHC requested full access to archival records but was limited by the Vatican. In February 2002, Pope John Paul II granted historians access to the archives. The commission submitted its findings to the Holy See’s Commission for Religious Relations.
