GREECE

Foundation for the Welfare and Rehabilitation of the Jewish Community in Greece
A royal decree in 1949 established the foundation, which was created as a legal entity under the supervision of the Ministries of Finance, Religion, and Education. Its primary goal was to care for and assist the members of the Jewish community who resided in Greece as of September 1, 1939, and who survived racial persecution during World War II. According to the decree, Jewish Holocaust survivors, victims, and their heirs could make claims in court for restitution or compensation of looted property within three to six months of the announcement of the decree. Heirless property was to be administered by the foundation.
