BRAZIL Comissão Especial de Apuração de Patrimônios Nazistas [The National Commission for the Search of Nazi Monies in Brazil] President Fernando Henrique Cardoso established the commission on April 7, 1997, to determine whether money confiscated from European Jewry was brought to Brazil by Nazis during and after World War II, to discover what happened to that money, and to restore it to its rightful owners and their heirs. The commission met once a month until January 1999, but because of inconclusive evidence and a lack of appropriate funding, the commission ceased to exist. Contact: Henry I.
